Wait... Did You Know Your Insurance Might Help Pay for Your Wig?

This is one of those things I wish more people knew.

Almost every week, someone sits down for a consultation and tells me they've been putting off getting a wig because it’s an investment that they thought they’d be on the hook for themselves. Then I ask them one simple question.

"Have you checked to see if your insurance covers a cranial prosthesis?"

Most people have never even heard that term before.

cranial prosthesis is the medical term many insurance companies use for a wig that is prescribed because of medical hair loss. Depending on your insurance plan, you may be able to receive reimbursement for part or even all of the cost after your purchase.

Every plan is different, so I can never promise coverage, but I can tell you it is absolutely worth making the phone call.

If you're experiencing hair loss because of chemotherapy, alopecia, an autoimmune condition, certain medications, or another medical reason, ask your doctor if they can write you a prescription for a cranial prosthesis.

That prescription is often one of the documents your insurance company will ask for when you submit your claim.

Most of the time, this works as a reimbursement. That means you'll purchase your wig first, then submit your receipt, your prescription, and any paperwork your insurance company requires. If your plan includes this benefit, they'll reimburse you according to your coverage.

One of the reasons I love offering medical grade wigs and toppers is because they are eligible for this type of reimbursement when your insurance plan provides cranial prosthesis benefits.

I know hair loss is already overwhelming enough. The last thing I want is for someone to miss out on a solution that could help them simply because they didn't know they had options.

If you're considering a wig, I always recommend calling your insurance company before your consultation. Ask them if your plan includes benefits for a cranial prosthesis and what documentation they'll need from you.

Then come see us.

We'll help you find a piece that feels like you, and we'll make sure you leave with the documentation you need to submit your reimbursement.

If this is your first time navigating medical hair loss, I want you to know something.

You don't have to figure it all out by yourself.

There are more resources available than most people realize, and sometimes that first phone call to your insurance company can make a much bigger difference than you expected.
